The PhD is the highest grade of education in the Italian academic system; it aims to provide the skills needed to do top-level research at a University or public/private institute.

A PhD is a post-graduate course open to MA/MSc (second-cycle degree) holders.

PhD candidates are trained to carry out scientific research, learning the skills for international research and for high-level professional engagements.

Admission to a PhD course is by university competition, calls for which go out annually.

At the end of the three-year programme one obtains the qualification of PhD.
